April 13, 2010 Hi all, and welcome to another year at Raven Crest,
CCT’s most prestigious golf course (ok, I am pretty biased)...desert course.
I say that of course because I have never seen a Spring as dry as we have
right now, and I don’t hear or foresee any moisture coming our way. Once the
irrigation system is up and running, we should be able to see some green up
at least. Until then, golfers will have to put up with our impromptu firemen
watering our greens. It’s windy, bone dry and dusty, but we still have it
better than a lot of courses will this year as we have unlimited access to
the North Saskatchewan river. Al Barclay be sure to give yourself a pat on
the back, as people are still building courses nowhere near significant
water sources, and they will suffer even worse this year.
We have a new Assistant Superintendent this year and his name is Chris
Jerram. Chris comes from Whitecourt Golf Club. He doesn’t quite have the
experience I’d like to see in an assistant, but he is well versed in golf
course techniques and I enjoy mentoring eager-to-learn young people. Candace
has moved on to greener pastures in her career choice so I wish her the
best. For all interested parties, I have given a list to Gord Nitz of all
the projects I would like to accomplish this year. We have a lot of
returning staff again so you will see a few familiar faces this year. I
would also like to take this opportunity to announce that we are deep-tine
aerating the greens on April 27 & 28 this year so anyone who likes to make
their grief about aerating known can stay home to save themselves the
aggravation. However, this will be the only time I aerate greens this year
as up until recently, they were done twice a year.
It's lunch so I have to go, however anyone with questions are more than
welcome to approach me regarding anything.
Hoping we get some rain,
Lonnie
